Google Glass is a gadget recently developed by Google in project glass research and development project. It is not an extension of Android smartphone or tablet, but is a whole new gadget in itself that can perform various day to day tasks, without anyone ever moving his/her hands. It contains optical head-mounted display(OHMD) whose unique property of reflecting projected images as well as allowing the user to see through it makes it one of a kind.It is also known as Project Glass and resembles a pair of normal eyeglasses where the lens is replaced by a head-up display. This miniature electronic device is especially useful for applications that require more complex computational support than just hardware coded logic. So this can be thought of as a type of wearable computers.
Manufactured by Foxconn, this basic Google Glass features an Android-powered display, a tiny web-cam, a GPS(Global Positioning System) locator and an Internet connection node built into one side of a pair of glasses. It has duel core CPU,1GB RAM (682MB available to developers),16 GB total flash storage(12GB of usable memory) which makes it a real utility device. It contains prism projector display that has unparalleled colour rendering, palette, repeatability and beam quality device. Google glass has sound created by bone conduction audio transducer which has many advantages as it does not block outside sound when worn, maintains sound clarity in very noisy environments as well as rendering the sound almost inaudible to other people and it can be used with hearing protection. Its 5-mega-pixel camera with capability of 720p video recording makes it as useful as an android phone if not less. The Explorer version of Google Glass uses a Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) which are inherently faster than other types of liquid crystals. This gadget can be connected to Wi-Fi,Bluetooth, micro USB. This highly featured device has a very light weight of only 50g. Apart from all this technicality it has some effective uses that we will discuss now.
Google Glass is very helpful for surgeon as they would appreciate having access to the vital stats of his patient straight in Glass if he needs it. Education is not limited to classroom now-a-days.You-tube tutorials have helped children to watch and learn but this device helps watching a tutorial as well as to record it at the same time. Google Glass can be controlled using “voice actions”. To activate Glass, wearers can tilt their heads 30° upward (which can be altered if desired) or tap the touch pad, and say “O.K., Glass.” When Glass gets activated, wearers can say any action such as “take a picture”, “record a video” and it record videos and take picture and even share them at the same time, which makes it a real-time device.Google Glass can show us text messages as well as emails one receives and allow us to reply to them via voice commands. This will even be a good thing to have for tourists who visit foreign lands where they don’t know the local language. Google Map application and augmented reality feature gives them all the essential routes to the destination prefered.Google Glass can even translate a phrase or sentence from one language to another and it will speak that out. Along with maps, translator can prove to be useful for tourists. It has an inbuilt GPS-chip mentioned earlier that can track ones movement and with its external health tracking monitor and health related apps it can probably display, track or log in the wearer pace, speed, heart rate and running duration which converts this device into health monitor interface. Google glass can work together with any Smartphone along with its apps and can prove to be an alternative of video conferencing.
Google Glass is not yet commercially available but some of those who signed up to the Google Glass Explorer program have been able to purchase a developer edition for $1,500. It will be cheaper in later date once its officially launched for public use.
